Who knew daffodils could grow in a mess?
Socks on my Catullus, hat heaps, wrappers
waiting for my feet to walk on; papers –
too many white sheets, wrinkled and distressed,
some seeking solace under the bed, ha!
There is no sun there, no haven: metal
grips, the carpet’s dandruff and excess hair
are all they’ll find. They’ll cry: “there must be more!”
For sure, old pens with caps lovingly chewed,
that list with names I now – not to be rude –
plain don’t need, but outside… Outside is what
They crave. A jungle of glossy weeds sat
with fag ends and cosy corks. Those are their thrills,
for in those somehow grow the daffodils.

David Morley read Zoology at Bristol University, gained a fellowship from the Freshwater Biological Association and pursued research on acid rain. He co-founded the Writing Programme at the University of Warwick, of which he is now director, and develops and teaches new practices in scientific and creative writing. He co-edited The New Poetry for Bloodaxe and authored The Cambridge Introduction to Creative Writing. He has published nine collections of poetry; the latest, The Invisible Kings (Carcanet 2008) was a Poetry Book Society Recommendation (photo copyright Jemimah Kuhfeld).
