The Truth about Nurses
It’s true – when someone dies
on the ward a nurse lays
the body out, straightens the fingers,
removes the saline drip and wipes away
the spurt of blood. She repacks wounds,
replaces teeth, and sets the jaw.
After washing the waxen skin,
if there’s no next of kin, that nurse
may place on the forehead a kiss.
It’s sometimes true, if time allows,
the nurse is sent to observe
a child being born, and she will find
some comfort in seeing oxygen deliver
colour into the veins of tiny arms, flailing,
like wings. It’s true, some nurses finish
their shift, crouch silent in a corner
of the changing room, then rush
home to hug their own children.
It’s also true nurses hold
babies who never draw breath.

Dr Sally Flint is a writer, editor, lecturer and actionist, creating local/global opportunities, collaborations and creative outputs that connect climate science, planetary health, environment, education, literacy, and the arts, to champion positive action towards a greener, healthier, and fairer world. She works with scientists, health professionals, educators. climate youth leaders, translators and artists, and is Creative Lead on groundbreaking international multidisciplinary programmes co-creating new poetry and climate stories that become the bedrock for sustainable theatre performances, visual art, music and soundscapes. As a result, One Chance Left, We Still Have a Chance, We Are the Possible, programmes and anthologies have been showcased to great acclaim at COP26, COP27, and COP28 Climate Change Conferences and beyond, reaching over 28 million people worldwide.
